From September 30 to October 3, the South American Absolute Swimming Championships were held in the Colombian city of Cali, with the presence of 850 swimmers from 12 countries. The Peruvian team was present at the competition and, among its members, had seven Italian swimmers. Rafaela Fernandini, Lía Espinosa, Micaela Bernales, Mariale Bramont-Arias, Ricardo Espinosa, Ian Heysen and Diego Balbi were part of the 16 swimmers called to participate in the different events. In addition, the team was accompanied by our coach Orlando Moccagatta, appointed coach of the National Team.
Rafaela won three bronze medals, in the 4x100 medley, the 50-meter freestyle and the 100-meter freestyle, while Ian and Diego obtained two bronze medals each: Ian in the 400-meter individual medley and 4x100 medley, and Diego in the 200-meter butterfly and 4x100 combined. This competition also helped Micaela and Ricardo achieve their personal bests, in the 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter freestyle, respectively. On the other hand, Lía and Mariale competed in the final of the 400-meter medley and 400-meter freestyle, respectively.
The balance has been positive for our swimmers. Beyond the medals, we continue to demonstrate that we have high-level athletes and continue our work to bring satisfaction at a national and international level.
